Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

This month all students in the building will begin Second Step’s bullying prevention unit for social emotional learning. The Goals of the bullying prevention unit are to develop students’ skills for recognizing, reporting, and refusing bullying and foster a climate of safety and respect for all. Students will be able to define bullying, identify bullying, Report bullying and refuse bullying. Talk to your student about the vocabulary bellow to help encourage students to understand bullying in all aspects of their lives.

Buddies Are Back!

Many classes are starting grade level buddies! This is an opportunity for older students to work with the younger students and vis-versa.

Mr. Boogart's and Mrs. Cummings' classes have quickly gotten into a buddy routine. We've gone to the Maker Space together, read to one another, and also did some informative writing for Halloween! The students get so excited to spend time with their buddy!

Enjoy the slide show from the Fun Run and the Track Meet.

From the Library

Our Fall Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success and it was wonderful to see so many families in person again!  We used the proceeds to purchase many books directly from the fair and the students will enjoy having these new books on our library shelves.  Thank you so much for your support!

Science of Reading -Red Words

from the Instructional Coach

Last month we shared that teachers are starting to use multi-sensory strategies to implement the science of reading.  One routine that many teachers have begun implementing is for Red Words.  The Red Word routine is used to teach words that are spelled unexpectedly.  They are called red words because you have to learn them by heart.  Teachers introduce the word by sharing the word in a sentence and the history of the word.  Students write the word over a screen or sandpaper and then trace it multiple times.  Next, students tap out the letters of the word on their arm, left to right.   They complete the routine by writing the word from memory and composing their own sentence.  Teachers introduce multiple red words each week and check to see if students have mastered the words before adding new words.

Ask your child what red words they have learned and what words they are working on

If you have any questions about OG or the science of reading please feel free to reach out to me at jamie.kelley@jeffco.k12.co.us
