From the Principal

Parents and Guardians,

As we move into October, I hope your family is able to take time to enjoy all the many fall activities that living in Colorado provides.  It has been wonderful to see so many people attend our first PTSA and Accountability meetings in September.  We are thrilled to have so many new Preschool and Kindergarten parent volunteers, as well as so many new Watch Dog Dads in our halls and classrooms!  Involvement and communication is key! Please contact us should you have any concerns, questions, or comments. When schools and families work together, children benefit.

Administrators and teachers everywhere recognize the important contributions parents make toward a child’s success in school.  There is no question about it - success at school begins at home.  Parents are the single most important variable in a child’s schooling.  Parents model both a silent and spoken language in front of their children daily. The close partnership between home and school is one of the exceptional strengths at Leawood.  We have a strong tradition of supportive, hard-working parents.  Throughout the year parents have the opportunity to develop that partnership in a wide variety of ways such as joining the PTSA, volunteering in the classroom, attending Accountability meetings, reading to their children, and helping in many other ways.  It is important to your child that you are involved in some way at school. It’s a way to let your child know you think his or her school is important.

On Tuesday, October 8th, Leawood will once again host our annual Invitational Track Meet at Jeffco Stadium. Thanks to Mr. Gonzales, Mr. Lomba and the many teachers and parents who support this incredible event. **Please note: due to a shortage of bus drivers this year, students will only be transported to the meet.  All track students will need to be picked up from the Stadium when it's over.**

Wednesday, October 23rd is our next PTSA Meeting in the Leawood Library, 6:00-7:30. Childcare is provided!

This year, our district has once again added a fall break on Friday, October 25th and Monday, October 28th.   Enjoy the glorious Colorado fall weather!

TRICK OR TREAT STREET at Columbine High School, Saturday, October 26th, 3:00-5:00pm. More information coming soon as well as donation boxes for treats.  We're looking forward to this year's Student Leadership Team once again helping prepare our "street" area and distribute candy to our guests.

Thursday, October 31st, Halloween Parade & Parties, 9:30am-10:45am.  Be sure to read the costume guidelines and expectations on the "From the School and Office" page of this newsletter.  The signups for bringing food to the party can be found HERE or on the PTSA website.  Please note, we've made a few changes in our typical food requests, as per our Healthy Foods Team!

October Wall of Pride, Lunch with the Principal, will be held Friday, November 1st.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS:

If you are interested in being a Leawood Crossing Guard, Jefferson County requires all staff and volunteers to take a crosswalk training before they can report for duty. View the training presentation and then take the test here: Link to test  You must score at least an 80% to be qualified, so please inquire your score before signing up.  You can review the presentation and take the test as many times as you'd like.

Remember to arrive in the office around 8:40 in order to get your vest and walkie talkie for crosswalk duty, and be in your assigned crosswalk by 8:55. Your student(s) may not be in the crosswalk with you.  Have them wait on the grass in front of the school.

All crossing guards are required to sign a Workers Comp Waiver as well.  Please leave with the office staff.
