Leawood Giving Tree
This year our Leawood Giving Tree has been moved online! Despite our different circumstances this year, we want to continue our tradition of helping our families who may need some extra help during the holiday season. We are collecting wish list items and gift cards from November 30th to December 11th at Leawood between 9:00am and 3:00pm. Please contact Jennifer Magri at jmagri@jeffco.k12.co.us with any questions or to arrange a different drop off time. Thank you!
We hear more and more from parents requesting support with social-emotional and behavioral issues with their children. We are thankful at Leawood to have 2 social workers, Mrs Magri and Miss Katie. They have created this amazing website to support our families. Check it out using the link to the right or at the bottom of each newsletter page.
5th grade will once again start collecting pop tops after the first of the year. It might look a little different with class contests, but the result will be the same: doing something good for the community. All the pop tops are given to the Ronald McDonald House to help support their monthly overhead expenses. During this holiday season, please start a jar to collect them in, and I will let you know when to start sending them into school. Thank you, Mrs. Story
Your student should have successfully signed up for an account to smartmusic.com which is an online suite of practice tools. Try to have your student demonstrate logging on, finding their method book, and performing a short song with the background accompaniment.

Here is a video of Mr. Whaylen demonstrating the basics:
If your student is not yet signed up, or struggles to find their way to the correct materials please contact me for assistance.
Students should be working on music to inspire some upcoming holiday cheer! Orchestra students should be practicing #20 (Good King Wenceslas), and #41 (Jingle Bells), as well as working on their bowing fundamentals. Band students can be practicing #27 (Good King Wenceslas), and Jingle Bells on page 12 of their book.
We will continue to meet virtually throughout the month of December, so be on the lookout for more communications regarding instrumental music.
Sincerely and Musically,
Eric Whaylen – eric.whaylen@jeffco.k12.co.us
Fourth Grade has been studying Colorado Geography. Students have learned about the concepts of Colorado regions, reading maps, & map tools, ect. This helped us in class to create and investigate geographic questions about the different people of Colorado and why they migrated to different regions. Also, this incorporated concepts from other content areas. At home students utilized a variety of resources including the internet and books as references to help with their Salt Dough Maps.
The Columbine Roots Garden had intended progress this year, but COVID has delayed that. Hopefully 2021 will be better! Leawood still has all the custom bricks that were purchased by our community, and we intend
to build a round tree ring in the west area by the stage. Irrigation will need to be hooked up to bring water to the tree. Anyone with masonry experience we need your help.
Also, garden clean up needs to happen, and the easiest way is to bring a bunch of trash bags to the garden and everything goes in. Cut the plants at the dirt (do not pull) and the earthworms will eat the roots all winter. Tomato cages, etc. can go in the shed. Last year we collected 66 bags of leaves and covered the dirt in each bed (with the bags, do not dump). This is optional, but helps keep the earthworms warm and happy. The L bed in the SW corner has perennials, so they can stay and they will come back next year.
The Green Team is looking for teachers and parents who would like to be involved in the garden. Only small amounts of time are needed plus a few meetings a year to brainstorm. If you are interested, please contact Ryan Boogert at ryan.boogert@jeffco.k12.co.us
