This month’s Digital Citizenship topic is Cyberbullying, Digital Drama & Hate Speech. Use this Digital Citizenship Family Letter for the Discussion Question for School and Home: How can I connect positively, treat others respectfully, and create a culture of kindness?

From our School Social Worker

Thank you, Leawood families, for contributing to our Fun Run which will help support our new school spaces, including the Makerspace.  Funds from this event will be used for non-consumable materials that can be used for many years by all students. A special thank you to Tony Varos for his generous donation of brand new Legos and to Staci Neustadt for the construction materials set.  We are always looking for donations of consumable craft materials as well, such as pipe cleaners, foam craft balls, googly eyes, buttons, feathers, plastic beads, and bottles of Elmer’s glue.  If you have questions about donations, please reach out to Jennifer Magri, at Jennifer.Magri@jeffco.k12.co.us

Support Available for Families

Leawood has resources for food and clothing! The Food For Thought BakPak Program is a partnership of businesses, faith-based ministries, and the communities of SW Jefferson County who care about hunger needs of students in our schools. This program is designed for families who are struggling financially and may need support to provide adequate food for their children on weekends. The weekend bags consist of food for meals for each participating student. The food will be packed in a plastic grocery bag. It will fit in the child’s own backpack or will be easy to carry. The food is distributed at the end of the school day each Friday.

Serving Kids is a Jeffco Schools clothing bank that provides students with gently used clothing.  Requests for clothing are made by a Jeffco schools employee, and then delivered to the school by the Serving Kids staff. Once delivered, Jennifer Magri will contact you to arrange delivery or pick up.

If your student(s) would benefit from either of these opportunities at any time during the school year, please reach out to Jennifer.Magri@jeffco.k12.co.us.  All requests are confidential.

Science of Reading Update

from the Instructional Coach

Over the last year, Leawood teachers and staff have been doing a lot of learning about the science of reading.  The science of reading focuses on implementing researched-based best practices in reading for all students.   Over the last few weeks, all classroom teachers and most paraprofessionals were able to attend Orton Gillingham training.  Orton Gillingham, or OG uses a multisensory approach (auditory, kinesthetic, and visual learning)  to teach reading and spelling.   Over the next few weeks, teachers will start using these new routines within their literacy block.  We are looking forward to sharing more about our new learning as the year goes on.  OG has a Facebook group for families called Reading Strategies for Families if families are interested in learning more about OG now.

If you have any questions about OG or the science of reading please feel free to reach out to me at jamie.kelley@jeffco.k12.co.us.
