Dear Leawood Families,
What a wonderful week we have experienced at Leawood Elementary. I love observing teachers in classrooms, visiting with parents and working with our staff at Leawood. I am fortunate to be the interim principal at Leawood to support our preschool through fifth grade students and families.
The Cat in the Hat arrived on Tuesday to greet our students plus two players from the Colorado Rapids joined us to read aloud. Thank you to Lisa Pepper, Kevin Kolasa, and Margarita Russell for organizing a fun event that encouraged students to read more and learn about soccer! Our Digital Teacher Librarian, Lisa Pepper, organized a week of reading and fun for every classroom. The Leawood Read Across America Week was a huge hit for all of our students and staff at Leawood.
I am thankful for our PTSA and Parent in Education Committee (PIE) as our parents support and meet with leadership monthly to learn about Leawood Elementary. Please view the link from one of our last virtual meeting. Partners in Education
Thank you to all the families who attended conferences in February. Classrooms in our building are full of thoughtfully planned, engaging authentic activities. Jamie Kelley, our instructional coach, works with our staff weekly to ensure planning, instruction and testing is meeting the needs of all students. Jamie and our staff are incredible!
Today we were amazed at the chemical reactions and science experiments presented by Science Matters during our school assembly. Please watch for the Science Fair Entry Form coming home in today's Friday folders. Students will present projects to the judges (AP Physics students from Columbine High School) on the morning of April 20th. The community viewing is at 6 pm and the Awards Ceremony will be at 6:30 pm in the gym on April 20th as well.
I have included a link for all families as it's important to be aware and care for our children regarding social media. Please reach out to me if you have any questions.

Spring break is just around the corner, and the end of the school year will be here before we know it. Be sure to check the bottom of this page for the many upcoming March events. The month of March will fly by in a blink. Our teachers will be working on March 17th as a teacher learning day has been scheduled for them to review data and prepare lessons. Spring break takes place for families from March 17 - March 26. Take some time to slow down, relax, and enjoy your kids. We are so fortunate to work with your children.
Your children bring us joy and laughter every day!
Kindly,
Marcella Hoefner
Interim Principal
PS...
Please mark you calendar for our CMAS testing for our 3rd - 5th grade students from April 4th - 13th. We will send a separate email with more information to families to save the date as it is important for students to attend school during this time frame.
