Dear Leawood Elementary Families,
Wow, we have had a lot of fun events in the month of September with the Leawood Movie Night, Watch Dog Dads/Marvelous Moms Kick-Off, School Accountability and PTSA meetings, and Leawood 5k, to name a few. Thanks to all the parents and the families who have attended these events, and a special thanks to the parents who have organized these events; it truly takes a village.
On September 14th, we held our Watch Dog Dads/Marvelous Moms kick-off event. The purpose of Watch Dog Dads is twofold; one is to provide positive role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important, and the second is to provide an extra set of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying.
During the event, I shared my personal experience with Watch Dog Dads and how my children wanted me to sign up to volunteer at their school. I must admit that at the time, it seemed that the hours away from my work would be too much of a sacrifice. However, they continued to persist, and at the same time, I was hearing from many of the fathers how it was such an enriching experience for not just their kids but for them as well. My children were beyond excited the first time that I volunteered as the Watch Dog Dad at their school. They loved that I was there helping in the classroom and at recess, and all of the attention that they were getting from friends by having me present at their school community. For me, I really enjoyed walking through my children’s schedules, meeting their teachers, and seeing firsthand what their typical day is like from a student's perspective. It was also from doing this that I decided I wanted to pursue a principalship at the elementary level. Thus far, I have been amazed at the number of Marvelous Moms, Watch Dog Dads, and other volunteers who come in to support the school. I am grateful to all of you!
On October 17th and 18th, from 3:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m., we will be hosting our fall conferences. Conferences provide a great opportunity to share celebrations, problem-solve any issues, and continue to build partnerships between home and school. We look forward to this chance to dive into this work with all of you.

Thank you, and feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Kevin Kolasa
Principal, Leawood Elementary
