FEBRUARY From Our Teachers

Leawood Elementary School

Book Drive Hosted by Student Leaders

Leawood Student leaders will be hosting a book drive February 1st - 23rd to benefit Read Out and Read Colorado.  This is a non-profit organization that works to give young children the foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read together.  New or gently used books that are collected through the book drive will be placed in clinic waiting rooms or exam rooms, where children of all ages can enjoy them and then take a book home.  Currently, there are gently used book libraries in more than 330 clinics in Colorado and more than 2,300 medical providers trained to deliver this program.  Student leaders will collect the books during the month of February in Leawood's front hallway.  At the completion of the drive, they will sort the books and get them ready for delivery.  If you have questions, please reach out to student leadership sponsors, Julia Cable or Jennifer Magri.  Thank you!

POP TOPS

5th grade will once again start collecting pop tops. All the pop tops are given to the Ronald McDonald House to help support their monthly overhead expenses. Please start a jar to collect them in, and I will let you know when to start sending them into school. Thank you, Mrs. Story

Congratulations to 5th graders Finn Goman and Abby Byrne for their Leawood representation at the Columbine Area Spelling Bee this week.  We're so proud of your hard work.

Leawood Recycling Center

The kids and staff have been working hard at recycling thanks to Mrs. Diaz for putting together the new Leawood Recycling Center. This is our first shipment to TerraCycle and we had over 600 juice pouches, a full box of cranberry wrappers and 200 glue sticks.

Food Drive

Leawood is participating in a food drive called Grub Club until February 7th. The drive is collecting both monetary donations online, and food items at the schools. At Leawood, we are collecting soup cups with a POP-TOP lid and snack size chips for homeless and emancipated Jefferson County high school students. The students do not have can openers or access to stoves, so please make sure donations are able to be opened without a can opener. We are hoping to collect at least 6,500 soup cups and 6500 snack-sized chips in the Dakota, Chatfield, and Columbine areas. Please help us if you can! All donations will be greatly appreciated. Collection boxes will be in the front lobby here at Leawood, but you can drop them off at any other Columbine area school if that is more convenient. Students may bring one (or more) of the above donation items to school from now until the 7th of February!  To encourage participation in this food drive, on Friday, February 4th, we will be having a Giant Stuffy Day/ Pajama Day. If your child chooses to participate, please have him or her bring a donation item to the classroom that day. If you send in donations any other day, they should be dropped off in the front lobby.  If you would like to make a monetary donation, here is the link: https://app.etapestry.com/onlineforms/JeffcoActionCenter/Grub-Club.html. Make sure to mention that you are donating for Leawood.

Shout out to our amazing Band and Orchestra teachers, Aaron Graverson and Carrie Welch for the terrific area concert this week.  The kids sounded great and it was such a wonderful opportunity for them. We appreciate all that you do for students.
