FEBRUARY From Our Teachers

Leawood Elementary School

A Message from Band and Orchestra!

Hello from Leawood Band and Orchestra! Our students were very glad to get back to making music in person for this month. All band and orchestra students have been working on learning how to read new rhythms using EIGHTH NOTES. Try to make sure all our instrumental music members are practicing regularly at home!

The 5th grade Pop Top Club is in full swing.  Please send in your pop tops to your student’s class.  All pop tops are donated to The Ronald McDonald House in Denver to continue their great work of helping children and families.

A Message from Music

In music, Mrs. Voth's 4th and 5th Graders have been working diligently to produce a music video from start to finish. They completed all the brainstorming, selection, and production of tracks and video clips. If you would like to watch the final product all together, follow the steps below:

From P.E.

It is great to see our kids again and really brings joy to my heart.  Our kids have done a great job and I have really enjoyed this time together.  I have had a lot of questions from many of our kids and parents about gymnastics and track.  I keep praying that something will work out for both.  For the track meet, I have talked to the Jeffco Stadium director and if it does work out, it will be toward the end of May.  I am hoping that somehow our gymnastics can work out this late spring.  For field day we have our hopes up to have it or at least a modified version.  We are preparing for both indoor or outdoor depending on what our situation is in May.  I will keep you informed.

Have a great rest of the year.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL)

Our students have learned about mindfulness practices and are continuing with Second Step as we rejoin our classroom communities. Some students learned about the book “A Little Spot of Optimism” and discussed positivity. Being back in person means we are revisiting and practicing the focusing attention, listening, and empathy skills from the Second Step lessons.

If you are interested, please visit Jeffco’s Virtual Calm Room for activities and tools to help manage emotions and stress. It is available to students and families to explore and assist in calming the brain and body. Click here: VIRTUAL CALM DOWN ROOM

As a reminder, if you have not signed up yet, you can create a free account on www.SecondStep.org to learn more and connect with your child’s social-emotional learning. In creating the account, you will need to enter a 12 digit code, based on your child’s grade. Here are the codes (do not need to enter spaces) for the Second Step:

A great way to learn more about what your child is learning is to ask questions and create some space to share your thoughts with each other. Please feel free to reach out with any questions, wonderings, or concerns you may have.
