Leawood Elementary School

Principal: Kevin Kolasa

From the Principal

Dear Leawood Families,

The month of August has been one of discovery, new learning, and relationships for our students and staff here at Leawood Elementary School. The staff has done a tremendous job not only sharing expectations of the class but also building these expectations together and creating a sense of community. In one of our first staff meetings, I proposed that we focus on “connection before curriculum.” While both are equally important, students feel more comfortable challenging themselves with their learning if those relationships and the connection with the teacher are already formed. Connection is the keystone to building a solid education.

As the new principal, I have been able to ascertain in a very short time how special this community is. So many people I know have asked how the transition has been for me, and each time, I share how welcomed I have felt by this community. That has made such a difference in my life as I learn about the school’s climate, culture, and Leawoodisms (yes, this is a word).

I also want to take a moment to thank this community for its generosity. You have certainly come through with your donations and volunteerism. When the request was put out for additional snacks and a wagon, I was shocked that, later that day, we were already receiving shipments from Amazon. We also have a big donation from the Lopez family from Walmart. In addition to all of this, it has been wonderful to see how many families volunteer their time and work in the school to provide support in multiple areas. Not to forget all the hard work that PTSA put in for the Columbine Block Party. This is such a great event to bring all families together from the Columbine area. It has been inspiring to me to see how much this community gives back to the school!

School pride comes in many different forms. The first image is of Kenlea in 1st grade showing off her nails that are Leawood colors. The second and third pictures are from the Community Event to improve the school. Madelyn from 4th grade sitting next to her wonderful chalk art and some of the Leawood staff providing improvements to the Columbine Garden.

Thank you, and feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Kevin Kolasa
