Haven Glover, a University of Michigan freshman on the pre-med track, has always been interested in nutrition and health. As a child, Haven first discovered this interest through gardening crops like tomatoes and lettuce in her backyard in Oakland, California. She continued this activity with her mother after moving to New York, and the family incorporated this produce into meals they were making. These meals were an opportunity for Haven to connect with the variety of cultures and countries her family comes from, such as Germany, Ireland, Portugal, Nigeria, and Ghana. Haven also used this produce during her 10 years of gymnastics and cheer, when her teams came together to cook meals for their travel competitions. One of Haven’s favorite memories is the night before her cheer team’s flight to the 2022 Nationals in Florida; they stayed up until 3AM cooking “sneaky spinach brownies” that they ate right after their final competition. Over her life, Haven has, and will continue, to use cooking and gardening as a means to connect with the people in her life that she loves.
