Material Types
The Material Types table is used as a lookup list in the Materials table. Because it's a lookup list only, it's maintained in the Data Editor. Material Types play an important role in the Engineering Estimate where the appropriate material is automatically selected based on the Material Type that is selected.
Materials
The Materials table is updated directly in the Items module. It contains all the materials used in manufacturing and is used for Estimating and Purchasing. The Type selection determines which dimension fields are enabled. Types include:
Round Bar - Diameter
Hollow Bar - OD, ID
Flat Bar - Width, Thickness
Square Bar - Size
Square Tubing - Size, Thickness
Hexagon Bar - Size
Hexagon Tubing - Size, Thickness
Angle Bar – Equal - Side, Thickness
Angle Bar – Unequal - Short Side, Long Side, Thickness
Plate - Width, Length, Thickness

The easiest way to add a Steel item is to select a similar item that has already been added and to copy it.
For estimating purposes, it's important that every Steel item has a Cost Price linked to Unit: mm
