Al pasar del Direct Speech al Reported Speech se producen cambios de verbos modales en la oración, por ejemplo: They -will- help you. Pasa a: She said that they -would- help me. Aquí hay más ejemplos para entender su funcionamiento.
Can → Could
Peter: "I can stay here until Sunday"
Peter: "Puedo quedarme aquí hasta el domingo"
He said that he could stay there until sunday
Él dijo que podía quedarse allí hasta el domingo
Mike: "I can do this alone"
Mike: "Puedo hacer esto sólo"
He said that he could do that alone

Beth: "I can't open this jar!"
