Read&Write: Using PDFs with Google Chrome

The premium version of Read&Write for Google Chrome™ also supports for PDF files in Google Drive. To use, simply double click on the file to have it open in the Read&Write for Google Chrome™ viewer.

Review the materials below completely before using with students.

Setting the Default PDF Reader in Google Drive

If you have PDFs that you want your students to read/highlight using the Read&Write tools, you will need to set Readd&Write as the default PDF viewer in your Google Drive.

To set as default, click the systems icon at the top right of the Google Drive screen and select “Settings”.

Click “Manage Apps” and scroll down to Read&Write for Google Chrome™ and then select “Use as default."

This requires that you turn on this option.

1. Click the Texthelp PDF Reader in your Extensions bar.

2. That takes you to this page and allows you to set your OPTIONS.

3. Click the Open Web PDFs, Open Classroom PDFs Directly, and any other desired settings.

Once the PDF is open, if the file does not open in the Read&Write for Google Chrome™ viewer, it is either not set as the default app or it is not installed. 

If the Open with option doesn't show at the top of the PDF, the student will need to select Open in new window.

Use the Open with menu and select Read&Write for Google Chrome.

Use the tools at the top of the window or highlight text to activate the other tools as shown below.

Troubleshooting

Once the PDF is open, if the file does not open in the Read&Write for Google Chrome™ viewer, it is either not set as the default app or it is not installed.
