Installing Apps on Staff iPads

Some SPS staff (e.g., PE teachers) have iPads assigned to them.

This page contains information on how to manage a staff iPad(s). Please read carefully; contact Technology Services if you have questions or need clarification.

Overview: Managed Devices

Management allows iPads to be managed behind the scenes; this includes adjusting specific settings or disabling certain features (e.g., in-App purchases, inappropriate videos).

Once the device has been setup for management you will see a Self Service app installed on the iPad.

The district purchases all Apple products direct from Apple and it enrolls us in the DEP program. This program locks the device to only be used at SPS. If a device is stolen we can lock the device with a notice that it is stolen and where to return it. Even if the device is wiped to factory defaults it will still apply the lock.

FAQs

How many licences do I need to purchase?

When purchasing apps it is important to remember you MUST purchase an App license for every device it will be installed on. As a school district we cannot share an App between 5 devices like you can at home.

What is VPP? VPP credits?

A VPP (Volume Purchase Program) credit is used to purchase apps direct from the Apple App Store. These credits can be purchased in any amount (i.e. $123.45) and are added to our SPS account. VPP Purchases of 20+ licenses are eligible for a 50% discount on most items. Licenses can be assigned to any device managed by SPS.

In App Purchases

In-app purchases are only handled by individual AppleIDs.

Tech Services recommends that you contact the developer and ask them to bundle all of the content together so it can be purchased as a single unit.

It is common that many developers don’t understand that they are producing content that is difficult for EDU to purchase and are willing to put this together.

If you make any in-app purchases, they will not be available to anyone (including yourself or an incoming teacher) should you leave the district.
