VPN
The District offers VPN (Virtual Private Network) services for approved staff members. The VPN allows for secure access to District network resources from outside the District network, such as home or mobile Internet connections.
If you are using the old IPSec-based VPN from prior to 2023, you will want to transition to this VPN as soon as possible. The new VPN is faster and much more simple to use. The old IPSec-based VPN will be going away in the future.
Prerequisites
A district account with VPN permissions. To request approval, please create a help desk ticket.
A supported device with FortiClient software installed and configured. Supported devices include Windows and macOS. There are also apps for iOS, iPadOS, and Android, but they are currently very buggy and may not work correctly.
Download the correct FortiClient software from this link: https://www.fortinet.com/support/product-downloads#vpn
On some devices, the installer may ask for permissions. You should complete these steps, as appropriate.
You should be connected to a network that allows TCP port 443 access to the SPS network, specifically, to vpn.springfield.k12.or.us. On most networks, this should just work. Some networks with strict filtering may block this connection.
Instructions
These instructions are roughly the same for each platform.
Complete the Prerequisites.
Launch FortiClient on your device.
Click Configure VPN and configure the VPN as follows:
Connection Name: SPS VPN
Remote Gateway: vpn.springfield.k12.or.us
Select "Save login" on secure devices, if desired. If you are using a shared-use computer, you should instead select "Prompt on login".
If the "Username" field is visible, put just your District username (usually "first.last").
Click the "Save" button.
4. To connect to the VPN, enter your username and password and click the "Connect" button.
Note: In order to connect to the VPN, you must be outside the District network!
