OpenVPN
Note: This is a draft document. It will be changing frequently, so be sure to refer back to it.
The District is migrating its users to OpenVPN.
Prerequisites
Your account must be enabled for VPN access. We have a limited number of licenses available. All requests for VPN access should come through a help desk ticket from your building administrator. For quicker response, please use Requesting New -> VPN Access.
Your account must be enabled for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
You need to have a supported device. We currently support macOS, Windows, iOS and Android where possible.
Your device operating system (OS) should be updated to the most recent version available. The VPN does not support older operating systems.
Patience. This is a new system and we're still tweaking it for the smoothest user experience we can. Your feedback is very important.
Installation
Scroll down your list of applications until you see OpenVPN. Click the Launch button.
3. You should now see the following page. Click on the OpenVPN Connect link most suitable for you -- usually the Recommended item. It should download some software or redirect you to an app store. From there, install the OpenVPN Connect software.
4. Once the OpenVPN Connect software is downloaded and installed, it's a good idea to open it for the first time.
5. Then, go back to the web page from step 3 and click the Yourself (user-locked profile) link under Available Connection Profiles. This should either download a .ovpn file or attempt to open it in OpenVPN Connect. If downloaded, open that file up. It should open in the OpenVPN Connect app and be configured for your District account.
Connecting to the VPN
Launch the OpenVPN Connect application.
Click or tap on the switch (marked with the blue arrow below) next to your profile. It will open a browser window and direct you to an SPS Portal login page and ask you for MFA.
3. If successful, you should now be connected! If you're not successful, carefully review the steps above. If you cannot figure it out, create a help desk ticket with as much information and screenshots as you can.
4. When you are finished using the VPN, be sure to tap the checkbox next to your profile in the OpenVPN Connect app to disconnect. This will help prevent hung sessions that prohibit you from reconnecting to the VPN.
