January 12, 2025As temperatures drop, George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science is experiencing a surge in illnesses, sparking worries about the potential for widespread sickness. The school's security team has built up their vigilance, putting measures in place to protect the campus. This ongoing issue underscores the difficulties in curbing the transmission of illness, particularly as many people are neglecting essential health precautions.
With sickness running rampant Carver staff want to find ways to limit it. From wearing better clothes for the weather and coming in earlier to warm up quicker. Many students, in spite of the low temperatures, often fail to wear suitable attire, which plays a significant role in the growth of illnesses. The chilly weather is causing more students to fall ill, primarily because they are not dressing warmly enough to protect themselves. Ms Bailey, a security guard at George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science, spoke about students and the appropriate clothing that should be worn in inclement weather.
“About 300 come in in their hoodies and little thin jackets," Officer Bailey said.
While there is a significant amount of illness circulating, it does not constitute an epidemic akin to the outbreaks that can occur from one school to another. Ms Bailey's personal experience is significant as she observes everyday. We asked if the sickness mass spreads throughout any other schools within the area.
“The kids in here do be getting sick though,” Officer Bailey said
To prevent the outbreak of illness on our campus, it is essential for the entire school staff to work together. This collective effort will not only ensure the safety of health, but also encourage a unified approach to addressing the challenges posed by illnesses. By collaborating, school staff can create a healthier environment for students.
“If people cover their mouths, keep their hands washed. For real, though because it's important to stay clean especially with it being flu season."
Though COVID is over do not underestimate the power of a face mask it protects yourself and makes people aware to keep distance in case.
“Advice I have is to where a mask, if you come in contact with someone if they got a mask on and they talk it protects you a little bit, but if you don't got no mask on then they start talking it's going to make you feel some kind of way,” Officer Bailey said.
While some may view these precautions as unnecessary, they are essential for ensuring a safe experience on campus.
“People wear face masks and you know that right, when they wear their masks I believe they are sick”
When individuals are feeling unwell, they typically refrain from attending school to avoid posing a health risk to others. However, there has been a noticeable trend of people choosing to disregard this precaution.
“They still been coming to school," Officer Bailey said.
Illness frequently occurs due to a lack of preventive measures, and this does not significantly impact attendance rates as students dismiss such an issue and continue to attend school.
Which it should, cases of flu and other illnesses should not be neglected as the weather gets colder. Make sure to cover up and wear a mask if you are feeling under the weather. And if you feel too bad don't come to school. To lower illness rates in your school it takes cooperation.
