November 8, 2024On Sep 9, 2024 around 3:00 pm a heated argument sprung into a shooting on Cecil B Moore Ave outside of Dunkin Donuts, where some of our Carver students were getting an after-school snack.

At 3:53 pm on the 1400 block of Cecil B Moore, a 15-year-old was shot in the hip and placed in critical condition at Temple University Hospital. No weapons were recovered at the scene. Ontario, a 10th-grade student at E&S was ordering food at Dunkin at the time of the shooting. At first, he didn't know what was going on.
“During the time, they were mopping the place,” Ontario said. “So I thought it was the guy getting upset. But no, It was a shooting and I got down on the floor and I was scared.”
Tamia, another 10th-grade student at Carver was at 7-Eleven on Cecil B Moore, she heard the gunshots go off.
“I heard the gunshots and I immediately froze,” Tamia said. “I looked over to my friend and said we have to get out of here right now.”
Another 10th-grade student at Carver Jenncarlos was asked about the shooting. He was asked about his knowledge and how safe he feels while being at school.
“It makes me feel unsafe," Jenn said. "Because there wasn’t any protection for us”
The Shooter was said to have gotten away on the Broad Street Line at Cecil B Moore Ave, which is the same train that most of our Carver Students happen to take home. So we asked Ontario about his experience on the BSL.
“My experience on public transportation is usually the same,” Ontario stated. I mean, I use it daily to get to school.”
Tamia also takes the Broad Street Line and has a different experience on the train.
"There were multiple times I had bad experiences on the train," Tamia said. "There was an incident where a guy had a gun and he was freaking out."

The shooting changed the perspective of many students, although some of the students seemed to have remained unmoved by the incident that was only feet away from them.
“I mean, I can’t speak for everybody, but I’m used to it.” Ontario said.
Although Ontario was unmoved by the incident Tamia was affected by what happened.
“It definitely has taught me to be way more aware but also scared me, Tamia said.” And most definitely taught me to never have headphones in and if so always keep one ear open.”
