November 26th, 2025Immigrants and their communities in Philadelphia have been taken away from their families daily in the past year because of ICE kidnappings and raids in local parks and inside of businesses.
They've been dealing with the kidnappings of ICE in Philadelphia and how they've been helping the immigrant community handle these situations and how to organize.
“I did an internship with a program called ready for life, where you would help immigrants and asylum seekers learn English” Lucia Navano, organizer for Puentes de Salud, explains her background before coming to help in the city of Philadelphia.
Puentes de Salud is a medical non-profit based in the south-western corner of Center City.
“Their main goal is to teach youth that are a part of the immigrant community about health, rights, and ways to handle certain situations” anonymous youth member of puentes de salud, giving insight into the type of work that puentes goes into. “People usually come in here for check ups or for when medical emergencies arrive and they can’t afford it.”
This active prosecution of undocumented people has also lead to many losing their jobs due to widespread hate. Since January of this year, 2025, 1.2 million undocumented people have left the work force over fear of I.C.E taking them due to their legal status.
Organizations like Puentes De Salud have helped this issue out by hiring undocumented people and giving them benefits. Many of these people are beloved members of their communities and also about 7.4 billion in tax revenue annually.
In total, they contributed around 96.7 billion in state tax revenue in 2022. This is even after receiving the least amount of benefits as a collective population.
Many organizations are giving a helping hand to the local immigrants to help them navigate their lives.
Milpa, or “Movement of Immigrant Leaders in PA” has reportedly “started a campaign for drivers licenses for undocumented people to be able to get their drivers licenses” Lucia Navano said in an interview with a journalist last week. “At the moment, it’s legal in other for undocumented people to get licenses, but not in PA”
As Ice raids continue to happen many community members and organizations will step up to help the immigrant community in philadelphia.
