April 8, 2025Student stress levels have been higher than ever since Covid started. Results have shown that 75% of U.S highschool students feel stressed when going to school. While adults rate their stress levels at an average of 3.8, American students rated their stress at 5.8 on a 10 point scale. A school burnout out is the physical or mental exhaustion which causes decreased motivation as a result of prolonged stress or frustration.
Genevieve Ramsey, a student journalist for The Forum in Chicago, reported on school slump in her school. Ramsey thinks overworking students is a problem.
¨Although many sophomores are struggling to adjust to their increased workload, changes in the volumes and difficulty of academic work are expected as high school progresses,¨ Ramsey said in her article about sophomore slump.
An overload of stress and a bad school or home environment could eventually lead to depression or suicide. Humans are known to crumble under stress which can cause health issues such as physical problems like headaches, weight loss, and stomach problems. American teenagers have burnouts a lot because they stress about grades, how they look, having the perfect social life, and having their life as they plan it. It also doesn't help when parents are on your shoulder stressing you out either. Particularly, student athletes have to balance their grades so they can keep playing sports.
"I never gave up on school, but I did, like stop trying at one point and put in a lot of effort," sophomore Nohami Yiman said.
People usually don't realize but society has normalized unhealthy overworking on everybody especially high school students. But other than reductions in health their learning goes down too which leads to not a lot of open-ended answers, doing work not to learn but for grades, sleep deprivations, and other mental health problems.
Londyn Johnson, a sophomore, thinks teachers and students need a break.
"I feel like everybody needs a break, everybody should have like a day off once in a while," Johnson said.
Taking breaks from school is a good way to combat stress. Headspace also mentions taking breaks away from school because your whole life shouldn't revolve around school. You should do different activities on the weekend or even after-school to keep yourself happy.
Although a lot of schools and counselors have already realized that a big workload causes stress, they've taken action and made ¨wellness days¨. Wellness days are when the whole school does educational things all day, whether that be gym activities, meditation, or just a study hall to catch up on work. Many students like jael look forward to these wellness days.
¨ It's nice to take breaks sometimes and actually relax, especially when you're at school. I think they did a pretty good job when they made wellness days. They help a lot.¨ Jael Marshall said.
The Teenage period of your life is probably the most stressful because of school and worrying where you're going to end up at. And people consistently put stress on you at a young age to be better than anyone else. It's probably why towards the end of the year people give up most of the time.
A Lot of people fail to keep up with high demands when it comes to school and usually either drop out or let their grades tank.
Students aren't just students, they are humans with emotions trying to figure out the world at their own pace. Life isn't about juggling assignments it's about learning as you go.
