Cops helping kids

The North Penn Police Athletic League (PAL) Center serves hundreds of kids and teens in the North Penn section of North Philadelphia. Directed by Police Officer Glenn Haskins, North Penn PAL is a vibrant youth-development program provider. North Penn PAL offers an African Drumming Program, not offered at any other center in the City. Additionally, Officer Haskins offers “Get Fit Fridays,” a unique fitness program, and hosts an annual Health/Community Fair for the neighborhood. North Penn PAL is a part of PAL’s Adopt-a-Center Program, and is adopted by The TD Charitable Foundation.

Legacy Youth tennis

Throughout the summer, almost three hundred children took part in the three-part program. Preparing youth for success through our inclusive community, using tennis, education and character programming.

Home Run Derby

Participants from PAL centers across Philadelphia took turns at home plate to hit as many balls out of the park as possible. Encouragement from coaches, friends and teammates made this event extra special. Following a lunch break, winners were awarded plaques in different age groups, and a few children were even invited to participate in the next round of the Phillies Home Run Derby Competition.

PAL golf at Juniata golf course

A week of golf instruction and competition at the Juniata Golf Course in Philadelphia. Rizzo PAL Officer Ernie Rehr, who runs the program each year, commented on the summer of fun, stating, “The weather cooperated this year and all the kids were just outstanding in their development – whether they were new or returning golfers.”

One step at a time

Each year, the percentage for juvenile arrests decrease both around the program areas and city-wide. This program has been with me since I was 12 years old and I plan on volunteering once I have aged out. A lot of my friends have stated the difference the PAL program has made in their lives. PAL is a place to make friends, family, and something that will change your life forever.
