In 2024, cherrlell parker, mayor of philadelphia announced that some schools would be trying a new all year policy as an attempt to keep kids off the streets. It aims to help kids have more access to programs and more time in schools.
Her plan was to keep kids off the streets by extending the time schools are open and getting rid of long extended breaks. Parker talked about this on her blog; “Cherelle is introducing the Parker Plan for Education, and its cornerstone for better schools, increased economic opportunity, a more affordable place to live, and violence prevention: allowing kids to stay in school with enriching programs before and after classes and through the summer.”
