Immigration: Mistreatment of Immigrants in Detention Centers

By: Xavier Lemar-Thompson

There have been many claims against I.C.E and what goes on in their detention centers, most of which are not good. The claims vary from the people being poorly treated, to people dying and going missing in the custody of the agents.

As you can see on the news, there are lots of reports of immigrants being taken from the border and being brought to detention centers for holding. While in the detention centers the immigrants aren’t getting the proper food and places to sleep. Even after these accusations, the United States still chooses to use them as a source of security for the border. In California, their government has taken action and they’ve closed private prisons and detention centers due to all the claims made against them. Most people don’t know but I.C.E is their own private agency under the U.S Department of Homeland Security, this means they do what the government tells them to do as far as capturing immigrants, but how they treat them is all up to the agents.

Within the past 3 years, the government has yet to really take any large step in the right direction involving making the detention centers better for the immigrants while they are being held.
