The Experiences Of Black Students In The Educational System

Caucasian students have a higher chance at “receiving” funding and scholarships “for college”, compared to black students. The chances for a Caucasian is 14.2% while the chances for black students are 11.2%

Statistics show that being white gives you a higher chance at receiving a scholarship, when compared to black students and students of other races. Statistics also show that white people are represented at the top of the upper middle class, compared to black people.

" Students from middle-income families receive 13.8% of scholarships compared with 10.6% of lower-income families "

According to this, the main issue may come down to the income of a student's family, but should something like this decide whether students are worthy of receiving a scholarship from an elite school? The answer is no, this is because only people with higher income families will be permitted to attend elite colleges, despite other aspects or requirements needed to attend colleges in that category.

¨A student from the richest 1% of American families (from families earning over $611,000 per year) is twice as likely to attend an elite private college as a middle-class student (from a family earning between $83,000-$116,000 per year) with the same academic credentials.¨

Being the richest or coming from a middle class family gives you more benefits, though when it comes to students of lower class, it seems that they have to work twice as hard to receive the same treatment as those from higher class families.

¨Students from wealthy families are able to participate in more extra curricular activities, hold more leadership positions and receive more outside education/help (such as SAT and ACT preps) than students from less affluent families.¨

Though there are some programs that help benefit students with lower income families, to make it possible for them to find scholarships and colleges that fit their budgets and interests.

¨ They have programs that help students apply for colleges, one of them now used at Carver E&S is a program called Heights,¨ Mr.Pomales said.

The program Heights is a program that gives access and opportunity to Philadelphia's Youth (AKA the Black, and Brown kids of Philadelphia)

According to the Heights website, Our vision is to make Heights the place where Black, Brown, and first-generation scholars find support to reach their full potential. And it’s where we want to see the Philadelphia of the future.”

This program is a space for young black students of Philadelphia to feel secure in their education, as well as to help them improve and find success.

“Our main goal is to help students find success in their interest, we help with internships and scholarships, Said Mr.Robinson.]”

Yes, there are signs of diversity in the educational system, whether it's because of race or income. Though there are steps and ways to overcome this, such as getting help from programs that help you succeed whether you're black or white.

This article is to spread awareness, there shouldn’t be any diversity in the educational system, students educational rights shouldn’t be minimized based on their race, everyone deserves an opportunity to go to a good college or High school, not because they are richer than most people or have privilege because of their race, but because they worked hard to get there.
