Teachers in the SDP have been self-funding their classrooms for a few years now. This is happening because of low wages and the school district not giving supplies for the teachers. This is the case for some teachers at George Washington Carver.
Several teachers in Carver self fund for their own classrooms, the teachers who self fund for their own classes seem to find it helpful to the students. Mr. Doreain, an English teacher at Carver E&S feels like if they are able to buy their own supplies they know what can help the students in their own classes than the school district.
“I don’t know if it necessarily made better Keystone scores, but what it does is provide a classroom environment where students are able to do something a little bit different, to have responsibilities and take care of each other.”
Some teachers, like Ms. Curless an English teacher at Carver E&S, feel like it’s a “trap” because they have to fund for their class sometimes. She said that teachers don’t have enough money to buy supplies for their class and feel like they have to . This would be the hardest part of being a teacher, buying your own supplies with the little amount of money you are being paid.
“I feel like it’s kind of a trap, because we don’t really have the money to get everything we need, so it feels like you have to fund it yourself.”
When talking to different teachers about self funding for their classrooms they were feeling like it would be easier to help the students because they can buy what they feel is better for the brain. Mr. Doreain buys snacks for the students to help them have a brain snack to help them hopefully score higher on the test and exams given.
“One thing that we started last year with English two classes is having a tea day, so every single Friday, students are able to drink tea at the back of the classroom,” Doreian said.
Coming down to certain subjects teachers have their own stuff they would have to buy, like for the teachers who are teaching a film class or an english class would sometimes have to purchase movies for the students to get a better understanding of the work. Most teachers like Ms. Curless would show their classes the movies as something to help give the brain a break.
“But you know, things like the film class that I have right now, I don't have the movies so I have to buy them because otherwise we can’t watch them," Curless said.
Talking to most teachers the hardest part of self funding their own classrooms could be the struggles of waiting for the supplies to arrive. Majority of the teachers who self fund use amazon and sometimes that could be a set back because some stuff could take a little bit longer to arrive.
‘’And not that it’s a big deal, but it's just a things of making sure that Amazon packages get ordered, making sure we’ve got everything all set up nicely in the back for students to be able to treat themselves.’’
