January 21, 2025Carvers Student entrepreneurs go unappreciated as a lot of their work goes under the radar. Recently there has been a lack of awareness of business at George Washington Carver of Engineering and Science.
A lot of students at George Washington carver not only worry about academics, Some students have taken the initiative and have started their own business like Maurice Urbina-Williams. “I really love photography, I love taking pictures and making people smile”. Said Maurice, a sophomore.
Students like Brandon Brown, who has started his own brand clothing “Shirwrk” all on his own. Many students start their businesses for different reasons whether it's the money or for the love of what they do. Like Shirwrk.
“Why did I start ? well I pretty much started because I was broke” Said Brandon Brown, a senior at George Washington carver high school of engineering & science.
A lot of these students wish they could have more eyes on their business as a lot of times students and faculty go unaware of the sphere that is student-owned business.
“I just wish more people knew about what I was offering,” said Maurice.
But that's not all entrepreneurship seems to be a very captivating venture for the youth as most teens are interested in potentially starting their own businesses.
Some entrepreneurs find sticking to their craft hard as motivation and consistency plays a big part in the difficulty of student owned businesses.
“Challenges I faced was definitely the motivation and commitment of being consistent and trying to discipline myself to post every two weeks, or you know, get myself a little time to breathe and stay on the ground.” said Urbina-Williams.
Thankfully schools like Carver have had events such as the "Carver Co-op" where many students got the opportunity to show off the services they provide and the products they sell. And could potential even bring traction from outside the school environment.
“I say the Carver Co-op was a 9/10, because after that I got a lot more orders, and brought in a lot more money” said Brandon Brown.
Starting your own business can be an exciting new adventure, So make sure to support new up-and-comers.
