Students at Carver are complaining about the water fountains and are claiming that most are defective. They complain about broken water fountains and the inconvenience they cause, which often forces students to travel to other floors in search of functional ones.
As of March 2025, Carver seems to have 5 of its 7 water fountains working.
“So they do work. They actually do work. There is one water fountain that does not work," claimed Dr. Johnson, principal of Carver E&S.
Students feel as if the situation regarding water fountain availability has gotten better since the beginning of the year.
“So in the beginning of the school year, most water fountains weren’t really available, because I used to, like, the few times that I’ve tried to use them, they were either, like, just not working, or, like, just unavailable completely. But like, right now there’s starting to be like more availability when it comes to water fountains, because most of them are starting to be like maintained,” Oswaldo Mendez-Perez said, a sophomore at Carver E&S.

One of the main issues affecting water fountain availability is students dumping food and drink down the drains, stated Dr. Johnson.
“So a lot of people are pouring when they come to school with coffee or culada or iced coffee, or sometimes soup or whatever they bring for lunch, when you pour it into that water fountain drain, you actually clog it up and break the water fountains. And so that's the issues that we've been dealing with.”
Dr. Johnson says that another thing that affects water fountain availability is that some had to be turned off because of concerns about germs and contamination.
“We actually stopped the water fountain piece and turned it off because students, you know, we had a high rate of students who were reportedly sick, so we were trying to address that is to make sure folks weren't, you know, spreading any germs or anything,” said Dr. Johnson
Despite these challenges, most of the water fountains in the school remain functional.
“Water fountains were recently turned on. So, water fountains and hydration stations are now operational here in the school," assured Dr. Johnson
Signs like these are positioned above every water fountain in the building.
Since most of the water fountains are currently working, it’s our responsibility as a school to take care of them and use the proper etiquette to not break them in the future and inconvenience other people.
“So water fountains and hydration stations are now operational here in the school. I believe we only have about one water fountain that's currently down now, and that's because folks poured stuff into the drains. So that's typically what happens when the water fountains are down,” said Dr. Johnson
