Registration for the 2026-2027 school year begins Tuesday, December 2. There's lots more information on the "From the School & Office" page of this newsletter. Please be sure you are aware of procedures and deadlines.
Whether you are new to Leawood, or plan to return, all current and new families MUST go through this Jeffco Enroll process to indicate your intentions for the 2026-27 school year.
We will be holding an interest night on Thursday, December 11th for any incoming preschool or Kindergarten Families, or other families interested in choice enrolling for any grade level. Join us at 5:30pm in our school library.
If you're interested in a school tour, we will be offering them on December 10 @ 3:00 and January 22 @ 8am. In order to minimize any instructional disruptions, we are offering slots for 6 people at a time. Please call Leah Lefevre @ 303-982-2069 to schedule a tour.
Jefferson County Schools allow 4 modified contact days each school year giving teachers additional time and attention for assessing individual students. Leawood schedules two of these days in August to assess where students come into their learning at the start of the school year. The other days are in December and one in May. Monday, December 8, is our next assessment day.
On these days, teachers will be assessing reading skills and other assessments that they deem pertinent to guide the instruction for your child. Not all students will be tested this month. If you are new to Leawood and missed our beginning assessment days, you will likely be requested a time. We may also request a parent/teacher conference, either because we were not able to schedule one in October, or because we have further concerns we need to address. You will receive more information and the signup coming from your child's teacher. If not, reach out directly to your teacher with any questions. Thank you for allowing us this time getting to know more about the learning of your student.
Middle of the Year Assessment Scores
Scores for all middle of the year assessments will be shared after we return in January. Our testing window is short this year because of how the holidays falls. The window does not close until the last day before break. If you would like to see scores before then, please feel free to login to Jeffco Insights using your parent credentials.
Dear Leawood Families,
Can you believe we have only three short weeks left until Winter Break? This final stretch into Winter Break is always an exciting time in the building! We love the joyful atmosphere that comes with the holidays, and we have many wonderful events planned to celebrate our community and the season. Some of these events include:
12/4 5:30-7:00 pm: Canvas and Cocoa
12/12 8:00-9:00 am: Winter Sing-Along Assembly
12/19 1:45-2:30 pm: Classroom Parties
However, as the excitement builds, we want to share a gentle reminder: learning and belonging remain our core focus every day until the last bell rings for break. Our teachers are working hard to deliver critical standards-based content, and we need your partnership to ensure your student stays focused and engaged. Please help us by reinforcing the importance of regular attendance, completing homework, and maintaining strong classroom routines. We are committed to making these final weeks of the year both fun and academically productive for every student.
Practicing Patience: Our Habit of the Month
This transition period is the perfect time to highlight our Habit of the Month: Patience. Patience is the ability to wait or endure delay, confusion, or frustration without becoming upset or agitated. It is a critical social-emotional skill for elementary students, especially when facing:
Anticipating exciting holiday gifts and/or trips
Dealing with challenging classmate behaviors
Working through challenging assignments that require extra effort
Sharing attention with friends
We will be discussing and practicing patience in classrooms over the next few weeks, encouraging students to take a deep breath, manage their big emotions, and practice waiting gracefully. We encourage you to use this language at home as well! Modeling and practicing patience together will help our children navigate the emotional ups and downs that naturally come with this festive, busy time of year.
Thank you for your continued support as we finish 2025 strong! We look forward to celebrating the end of the year with you and your students.
Wishing you a warm and joyful holiday season!
Your Proud Principal,
Kevin Kolasa
