Read&Write: Accepting Permissions

Overview

Students will need to activate R&W and accept permissions.  If you intend to have students write on PDF documents this year, you will also want them to activate and set up TextHelp PDF Reader.

Review the slides, video and notes below to ensure that you are aware of the process and potential problems that a student may experience.

Accepting R&W Permissions

Solutions to Things that Could Go Sideways

There are a couple of things that could go wrong ... these include...

1. Students can't see the Allow button when accessing Read&Write for the first time.

Solution: Use the two finger scroll to scroll down the screen. If it is still unaccessible, try dragging the window to the right/left.

2. Students who click around too fast and don't wait for something to load resulting in the Permissions windows coming up behind the web browser window.

Solution: minimize the Chrome window to see if there is a permissions window behind it.

3. Students ignore the Allow Popups message when using the Vocab or Collect tools for the first time.

Solution: Look for the icon (shown to the right) in the address bar (it will be to the far right). Click it and select "Always allow popups from Google."

Tips

1. It seems easiest to accept all of the permissions when students access the toolbars in Google Docs first

For example, if you use Google Classroom with your students, a first step might be to create an assignment in Google Classroom so that each student gets a copy of a reading and then uses the highlighters and Collect highlights or Vocabulary tool.

2. To use the highlighting tools in Google Docs, the document must be editable; read-only will not work.
