At CONjuration 2024, Irvin did a joint presentation with Lorrie Kim about "The Scary Side of Hermione Granger" that they were very excited about, and Irvin had to dress up for the occasion, of course! (In addition to bringing many many props and gimmicks... their presentations veer towards the theatrical!)
Irvin had already cosplayed almost all the victims of Hermione that were going to be discussed - Severus Snape, Rita Skeeter, Marietta Edgecombe, Dolores Umbridge, and Ron Weasley. There was only one missing, and ironically the one that Irvin believes is the most alarming of Hermione's victims. So Irvin determined to complete the set, and seize the rare moment that calls for a cosplay of Cormac McLaggen.
This took a bit of creativity, given that Cormac doesn't wear anything distinct from other Quidditch players. But his distinct visual aspect is his large and athletic build, so Irvin procured a muscle shirt to indicate the physique, and paired it with Hogwarts sweatpants and Gryffindor Quidditch robes.
It should be noted that while this was apparent in context, more casual HP fans didn't quite get it, which is how Irvin got to be called "Gryffindor Hercules" throughout the night's party games. Which, honestly... not that far off.
Of course, it's all about the accessories, and Irvin got to use a really fun one - a sprig of mistletoe, memorably calling back to when Cormac tried to corner Hermione under the mistletoe (see below). There are very few cosplays that make it permissible in 2024 to accost people with mistletoe and smoochy faces, so Irvin made the most of it!
But as anyone who has seen the Half-Blood Prince movie can attest, the most memorable thing about McLaggen is the way he eats his dessert at Hermione. This became known in the fandom, or at least the NYC portion of it, as "doing a McLaggen." Throughout 2009 and 2010, no party was complete without a can of whipped cream and a McLaggens Contest - Irvin won his fair share of those.
So Irvin came ready with some whipped cream and his most sensual fingerlicking technique! This was even included in the presentation - this is the key moment. It really captures the essence of Cormac McLaggen!
