Mr. D

Costume Debut: May 2017

Costume Reprised: March 2019

When Irvin went to see The Lightning Thief musical dressed as Percy Jackson, he talked with actor George Salazar, and lamented that he could not cosplay Grover because of the difficulty of the furry pants. George jokingly suggested that he cosplay Mr. D, never believing that Irvin was crazy enough to take the suggestion to heart. Ha! Irvin immediately seized on the idea. After a trip to a thrift store for the shirt, and liberal use of Amazon Prime, Mr. D was ready.

Irvin decided to wear the costume to the closing performance, given that Mr. D's song "Another Terrible Day" was never more appropriate. He even brought a mug and, to honor his favorite joke in the entire show, a broken pencil. (He considered bringing a chair to throw, but felt that might be excessive.) The creative team and cast were so excited by the costume - the show's producer, Barbara, was excited to learn what Irvin's real hair looked like! And no one was happier than George Salazar, who never thought Irvin would actually cosplay him!

Irvin wore Mr. D again when The Lightning Thief's National Tour played NYC's Beacon Theater in 2019 - though it was most certainyl not a terrible day to have The Lightning Thief playing NYC again, the costume was too fun to not wear again!

With George Salazar, the original Mr. D!
