Miss Argentina

Costume Debut: August 2022

With Beetlejuice and Lydia

For the inaugural Broadway-themed dance party hosted by Defying Gravity, Irvin and his friends knew they had to bring their cosplaying A-game to set the proper tone for the event! Once Angelica and Lucas had committed to a group costume from Beetlejuice, with Angelica as Lydia and Lucas as Beetlejuice, it was a no-brainer for Irvin to join in the fun as Miss Argentina.

With less than a week to turn it around, Irvin had to craft everything in the costume from scratch. A green bodysuit was required, because Miss Argentina shows far too much skin to paint it all (indeed, the Broadway production does the same thing). Onto the bodysuit was velcroed a slash of red fabric showing how Miss Argentina died. The Miss Argentina sash was painstakingly homemade with markers out of a plain white sash.

But the trickiest part was the swimsuit – Miss Argentina’s is a beaded and bedazzled concoction, but all Irvin could source with Amazon Prime was a plain red one. So he got some very fancy red trim, with sequins and beads, to zhuzh up the swimsuit, and even added a little glitterglue pattern so none of looked ordinary.

But the effort, both in crafting the costume and in painting his face green, was well worth it – not only were the fellow revelers at the event suitably impressed, even people on the streets lauded Miss Argentina! Irvin was impressed with how many people were able to reference Miss Argentina’s lines off the cuff. For his part, the refrain for the night was “I was hot!” because it was a miracle the green make-up didn’t sweat off in the balmy August night.

Among the people at the event who complimented Miss Argentina was Chris McCarrell, who did not recognize Irvin in the slightest until a detailed (re)introduction was made, and Chris recalled that Irvin also led the field in cosplaying Percy. Chris even attentively checked in on how the green make-up was holding up mid-party on the dance floor!

Even though Irvin did not get to perform Miss Argentina’s epic number, “What I Know Now,” he backed up Lucas on “The Whole Being Dead Thing” when the DJs chose to spotlight the group cosplay. After the dancing concluded, the costumed cohort wandered through Williamsburg to a diner at 3 a.m. where servers literally did double-takes upon their entrance. And after the night was over, Irvin carried a bit of Miss Argentina with him for a while, because the green make-up was a little too good and some bits just wouldn’t come off with any amount of scrubbing.
