Newt Scamander

Costume Debut: January 2017

Costume Reprised: December 2017, November 2018, April 2022

Getting into the business of cosplaying Newt Scamander, much like everyone else in the fandom, Irvin debuted his version in January when he attended the premiere reading of Puffs' parody of Fantastic Beasts, "Dude, Where's My Fantastic Beast?" This is notable for being Irvin's first HP cosplay modeled on film versions of a character.

In December 2017, in what is rapidly becoming holiday tradition, TGTSNBN rode the vintage 1920s train in the subway, which seemed like a perfect opportunity for Irvin to bring back Newt - this time with an even flouffier wig. Unfortuantely, Irvin got a little bit too into character. He brought a niffler to set off the cosplay, but was running horrendously late due to subway issues. So during the mad sprint to meet up with TGTSNBN before the train left, Newt lost his niffler. So yes, Newt Scamander, on a 1920s train in NYC, lost his niffler. And then recruited a few witches to go looking for it. They never did find the niffler, but the appropriateness of the misfortune made it easier to bear.

Newt was the obvious choice of cosplay for the next Fantastic Beasts movie, Crimes of Grindelwald in 2018. Irvin determinedly kept the costume the same, reiterating that he was cosplaying Newt "from the first movie" - the one with color in it, until the trench coat (and everything else) became David Yates's usual dull gray. Irvin's friend dyAnne joined him as Leta Lestrange. While the movie itself was a miserable failure, the costume was a success!

Irvin stuck with the Newt cosplay for the third Fantastic Beasts movie, Secrets of Dumbledore in 2022. In a stark contrast to earlier events, he was the only one in full costume at the movie theater on opening night - but the other attendees seemed very excited to see someone who had put in the effort to cosplay!
