Dressing as Disgust from Inside Out marked the first time Irvin cosplayed a character without first consuming the source material... suffice to say, excitement levels for the movie were quite high. Irvin and his friends attended a preview screening, and attempted to cosplay a full set of emotions based purely on promotional material. In the end, they had three of the five: this Disgust was joined by Joy and Sadness. All were agreed that the emotions fit the cosplayers exceedingly well.
Because this event came up during an extremely cosplay-heavy time, there was some scrambling done to complete it in time. A wig was quickly procured, as was copious amounts of green makeup. Irvin was already familiar with green makeup after his work on Elphaba, but Elphaba's arms are covered, so this required much more makeup than usual. And while Irvin's green tights and skirt sufficed for the costume, there was no appropriate top, so Irvin hastily tie-dyed a wifebeater.
At the movie event, there were marketing researchers who worked for Disney. They got a picture of Irvin and his fellow emotions to send to the people at the studio. The makeup proved more resilient than expected, and stood up to copious amounts of tears without budging. It may have been too resilient, even, as no amount of scrubbing made it go away completely in the following week.
While Irvin didn't don Disgust again for quite some time, due to just how much green makeup is needed, he did reprise the costume for the release of Inside Out 2 - and if Pixar keeps making more movies, Irvin will keep painting himself green!
Irvin decided to wear Disgust - with a twist - for the 2025 Mermaid Parade. He proposed to his friends they show up as the mermaid version of the emotions - because mermaids have feelings too! The characters were colorful, they were in the highest-grossing film of the previous year, and they were reasonably comfortable (the thoroughly unbreathable mermaid tights notwithstanding). His fellow marchers ran with the idea, and as a result they had four of the main emotions - Jillian as Joy, Julia as Sadness, and Ralph as Anxiety.
The mermaid version of Disgust was largely just an improved and revamped cosplay of the character, with a pink tutu sering as the mermaid's tail. That required Irvin to take small dainty steps instead of his usual NYC strides.
The mermaid emotions, walking through the parade shouting all manner of silly slogans like "Feel your feelings!", proved to be a huge hit with children - perhaps the most popular they've ever been at the Mermaid Parade! By far the most popular emotion with the kids was Anxiety, which was... concerning, upon reflection.
As outings to the Mermaid Parade always do, this one ended at the beach. The cosplayers' reactions to said beach were remarkably in character - Joy was frolicking and giddy with happiness, Sadness glumly waded in, Anxiety was too anxious to go in the water, and Disgust went in but complained throughout about how gross everything from the sand to slime was. It was actually such a hot day that Irvin as Disgust went in for a proper swim for the first time in years, rather than the usual waist-deep wading for photo ops. Strangely enough the water (or salt in the water) turned the dyed tank top from a green into a bright sky blue... maybe it symbolized Disgust coming around on the idea of swimming in the ocean!
