Mother Gothel

The day before Halloween 2021, Irvin decided to attend a concert at Green Room 42 called "GR42 Sings Disney Villains." Despite having no shortage of Disney villain costumes in his repertoire, Irvin seized on the opportunity to put together a new cosplay - the villain of one of his favorite movies, Tangled.

The costume was surprisingly involved because there are so many little details in the outfit. Irvin had a red dress handy, but had to combine two trimmings to get the embroidered gold border on the neckline. He had to add gold clasps to the cloak. And most of all, he had to cobble together a belt that is held together through cartoon physics rather than real ones. (Ribbon, snaps, invisible thread, and a gold hoop eventually did the trick.) Finally, no less than three wigs were required to achieve Gothel's voluminous locks.

Still, the end result was something Irvin was proud of, and he made sure to take plenty of photos. (He also made sure to recreate his favorite moment of "Mother Knows Best," as seen below.) Of course, he had a few props to finish off the look: a dagger to stab Gothel's foes, and the basket she often totes when visiting Rapunzel's tower.

The costume saw quite a lot in its first outing - Irvin began the day by going to Coney Island with his family (including his ten-year-old niece). They were all about doing the rides in Luna Park, but Irvin was somewhat constrained by avoiding going upside-down. Still, they got to go on several rides, and Irvin made quite a sight with Gothel's cloak streaming behind him high in the the sky.

After the family outing, Irvin went to a Halloween party, and then finally made it to the concert that was the impetus for the outfit. The concert did indeed feature "Mother Knows Best," so the decision to craft the new outfit was the right one!
