Mr. Mime

Costume Debut: May 2019

As a '90s kid, Irvin was really really excited for the film Detective Pikachu, and obviously wanted to go see it on opening night in costume.  One of the parts that really tickled his fancy in the trailer was the interrogation of Mr. Mime, so Irvin decided to cosplay the Pokemon.

This was somewhat easier said than done, since Mr. Mime (despite being among the more humanoid Pokemon) has a distinctly inhuman shape.  For the puffy red parts around the arms and legs, Irvin went to his stash of air pillows.  He sewed what were essentially pillowcases out of red fabric, filled them with air pillows, and made them into a loop.  Using the same red fabric, he cut out a giant circle for his torso, and little circles for the fingertips.  All of this was attached to a white leotard using an obscene amount of safety pins (the fingertips were velcroed to the white gloves with mixed results), and set off with very bright makeup.  The trickiest part actually ended up being the headpiece: Irvin had to wrap black fabric around a horned headband and hope for the best.

The costume ended up being a lot of fun at the movie theater, even if the seats at said movie theater were very clearly not designed for such thick thighs.  And the movie proved to be just as delightful as Irvin had hoped!
