Mathemagician

Costume Debut: February 2024

For Irvin's 32nd birthday party, the theme was superpowers.  Irvin chose to forego the many superhero costumes he already had in favor of crafting a wholly original superhero.  Since his real-life superpower is mental math, Irvin dressed as the Mathemagician!

Starting with a wholly blank canvas in costuming proved an interesting undertaking.  Irvin began with the colors - yellow and blue, for his Ukrainian heritage.  Then the accessories and effects filled out the look.  The cape and cap were both made of fabric covered in math symbols - Irvin made the cape from scratch, which proved way more of a project than anticipated.   And he utilized the infamous blue legwarmers that had been so dearly procured a year prior.

To accessorize his belt, Irvin dug out a pair of protractors.  And for weapons, he got a set of the triangular set squares - they were plenty sharp!  Combined, the Mathemagician would use the triangles to shank criminals, and the protractors would ensure the weapons never missed!

His superhero emblem was 25 , a reference to his new age of 32 (and the reason for the party's theme in the first place!).  He was pleased when most of the party attendees understood the reference.  And one of the funniest parts of the party was when, after singing "Happy Birthday," the guests started shouting, "Are you two to the first power?  Are you two to the second power? Are you two to the third power?" and so on.

As the guests kept asking questions about the Mathemagician, Irvin came up with the lore on the fly.  It was decided that the Mathemagician's archnemesis is called Innumeracy, and he goes around teaching children to use calculators (gasp! shock! horror!).  Given a couple more hours, Irvin probably would have plotted out an entire 32-issue arc about their math-y battles and adventures.
