Ken with his Slovakian Barbie
Irvin's dance school, Big Apple Ballroom, threw a dance social with the theme of "Slovak Night" in honor of their Slovakian teachers (include Irvin and Yelena's teacher). Irvin and Yelena had been working on a Barbie medley performance already, and decided that they would perform it at the social - with a Slovakian twist!
As far as anyone knew, the Slovakian twist would come from the costumes. Irvin dug out his puffy shirt and Ken underwear from his closet; Yelena embroidered trim onto his pants (and a Barbie "B" onto the butt). For the signature item, Irvin sewed a vest from scratch for the first time after ordering some Barbie-patterned fabric.
But Irvin and Yelena went above and beyond to surprise their teacher - they commissioned someone online to translate and record a Slovakian version of Aqua's "Barbie Girl" to insert into their medley of Barbie songs, which served as a surprise at the climax of their performance!
At this point, Irvin and Yelena have developed a reputation for performances with high energy and higher production value - but custom music was a new step even for them!
