First off, I want to acknowledge the incredible job you all have done to raise such kind, empathetic, and patient young people. It may not seem like that all of the time, but when it really counts, they can step up the challenge. 💛
Our field trip to Arbor Village at Hillcrest Senior Living was a huge success! We started our day by gathering games and conversation starter cards at the school before loading the bus and driving to Arbor Village. The residents were excited to see the energy of youth enter the building. We started with introductions and then broke into pairs and small groups to get to know each other better. This was such a phenomenal opportunity for the 6th graders to step outside of their comfort zones. They had to work to find commonalities with someone up to 70+ years older than them and practice asking follow up questions, which is no easy task!
Some groups also chose to play a game with their senior pal, either learning a new game like Gin or Rummy or teaching their partner a new game. The residents and students all seemed to have a great time together.
When we returned to the school, the students spent some time reflecting on their experiences. It was so incredibly heartwarming to hear about how they worked through challenges, found connections with, and laughed with their new pals. Please try to find a couple minutes to check out your student's reflection on their Book Creator Portfolio, and ask them about their experience. We are really looking forward to continuing to build these relationships through letter sharing, as well as visiting again in December.
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education both in person and virtually. Our current wish list includes a set of classroom cameras (~$100 ea), our own set of 6 classroom Tello drones ($150 ea) that we don't have to share, Rubiks Cubes ($12), and a hand-held vacuum cleaner! The 6th graders will also be going on THREE field trips this semester, and we will need one of the bus trips (~$100) covered by Foundation donations. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THOSE WHO ALREADY DONATED!
IT WILL BE PUT TO GOOD USE RIGHT AWAY!
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
