We had another exciting day in the GATE classroom! We started the morning with some visual challenges that had many students remarking about their difficulty. We talked about how often times, GATE students find most of their school work easy while some of their classmates find most of their school work challenging. We empathized with and admired the grit these classmates show and tried practicing some of that same determination with these challenging puzzles.
The students then worked on updating their digital portfolios with their eye research projects and their eye anatomy pre and post-tests. The students should have calculated their growth score (the difference between their post-test and their pre-test.)
In the afternoon, the students learned about the SCAMPER brainstorm strategies. We used Reese's Cups as an example to work through the meaning of each of these strategies. For example, you could combine Reese's with a s'more to make a new treat or you could substitute white chocolate for the typical milk chocolate. They then applied the brainstorming technique to create games that could be played on a tabletop using only items found at a picnic or a restaurant table. They started by brainstorming a list of games and then applied elements of SCAMPER to fit the parameters.
During Free Choice, some students also started a project where they will sew their own stuffies.
If you are this student's mom, she asked that you not show this picture to her sister because she is making her a birthday surprise! 🥰️
Ms Gabrielli is a volunteer advocate with the Save the Children Action Network (SCAN), the bipartisan political advocacy branch of the 100-year-old Save the Children organization. On Tuesday, she got to meet with Senator Risch's staff to advocate for the senator's support of the MINDS Act. If you'd like to learn more about the MINDS Act or SCAN, click here!
Thank you so much to everyone that has donated to the Lowell GATE Classroom Fund this year! Your donations have purchased 2 drone kits, tons of art and engineering supplies, and 5 huge Lego sets! I have my eye on some Rubik's cubes, a full-sized microscope, and math/strategy challenges. Please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account.
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
