Today was spent exploring more of the microscopic world. The students started the day by checking out Mark Rober's experience with Foldscopes on this video and then finished building their own Foldscopes. Each student learned how to create and view a slide using their Foldscope. Some sampled grains of soil, hair, skin cells, and fabric fibers. The students also got the chance to explore the classroom using a handheld microscope I purchased using Foundation account donations! It was such a hit, I plan to purchase a few more that we can take outside with us to explore next week.
In the afternoon, a student presented the class with a math riddle that kept us stumped for a good 15 minutes. After that, students checked out the fascinating YouTube channel called Jam's Germs and practiced drawing detailed copies of some of their favorite microscopic creatures. Next week, we will learn about the basics of plant cells, and head outside to take a closer look at some plants. Head over to the class Instagram account to see if you can guess what classroom supplies look like under a microscope.
This moment caught on camera absolutely cracks me up!
Thank you so much to everyone that has donated to the Lowell GATE Classroom Fund this year! Your donations have purchased 2 drone kits, tons of art and engineering supplies, and 5 huge Lego sets! I have my eye on some Rubik's cubes, a full-sized microscope, and math/strategy challenges. Please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account.
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
