The 4th graders started their day last week playing a brain anatomy-themed game called -Ectomy. They then analyzed what worked about the game and what didn't, and we used that to develop success criteria for them to design their own brain anatomy games. The games needed to teach about brain anatomy or function, aid in memorization, be fun and easy to understand, and include clearly written instructions. We were able to test out a couple of the games and practice giving positive and productive feedback at the end of the day.
This week, we spent the first half of class playing and providing feedback for the rest of the students' brain games. Before lunch the 4th graders took a brain anatomy post assessment, which they will compare to their pre-assessments next week. THen after lunch we FINALLY completed the sheep brain dissection. The students did a great job following safety instructions and even got to pursue some of their own curiosities at the end of the lab. This will definitely be an experience they will never forget! Dissection photos can be found (or skipped) at the very bottom of the page.
If you'd like to check out any photos from my Thanksgiving trip to Panama, you can find them on the site home page.
I'm on the hunt for a few experts to join our class in person or via video chat. If you or someone you know would be interested, please let me know!
Professional(s) who use microscopy or microbiology in their work to teach the 5th graders about their job [Needed sometime before winter break]
A professional who know a lot about brains! (Bonus if you have any way to show the 4th graders a human brain...) [Needed sometime before winter break]
Someone who uses drones for their work (or potentially recreation) to talk about their job with the 5th graders (Bonus if you could fly for us!) [Needed during 3rd quarter]
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education both in person and virtually. Our current wish list includes a set of classroom cameras (~$100 ea) and Rubiks Cubes ($12)! Please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account. [LOWELL/GATE/GABRIELLI,AUDREY]
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THOSE WHO ALREADY DONATED!
IT WILL BE PUT TO GOOD USE RIGHT AWAY!
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
