This week, the 6th graders got to work on their Study of the City research. The students were assigned topics of study based on an interest survey and a class discussion to approve the topics. There will be students studying Boise's government, art, sports, immigration, economics, environment, and history. The 6th graders developed a rubric for the project that includes research standards, presentation criteria, and an interactive component. They will also be required to interact with a member of the community as part of their research.
In the coming weeks, they will work on solidifying field trip proposals and plans and present their research. Next week, we will also have a panel of former GATE 7th graders from Treasure Valley, North, and Hillside join our class. We're so excited to hear their insights on transitioning to junior high!
With the hopes of taking some awesome photographs on our field trip (tentatively planned for Monday May 9th), the 6th graders are also learning and practicing some photography composition skills. Today's lesson was an introduction to composition.
On rainy days, I always try to set aside a cozy reading period. Today we read for 15 minutes and then listened to George Winston's "Cloudburst."
Thank you so much to everyone that has donated to the Lowell GATE Classroom Fund this year! Your donations have purchased 2 drone kits, tons of art and engineering supplies, and 5 huge Lego sets! I have my eye on some Rubik's cubes, a full-sized microscope, and math/strategy challenges. Please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account.
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
