Today the 6th graders continued work on their Study of the City research, and some students finished their presentation prep. The presentation work includes developing 3 subtopics, reaching out to a community member as a research source, and incorporating an interactive element to their presentation.
In the afternoon, the class worked together to plan our field trip schedule. Several students had to send professional emails to ask questions to community members about their topics, while others made phone calls to inquire about scheduling and logistics. The students who made phone calls developed a script or talking points before making their calls, and they did a great job adapting their conversation based on the information they received. This isn't a very natural skill for most 6th graders, so it was cool to watch them at work.
Once we gathered all of the information needed from the emails and phone calls, we got to work using a spreadsheet and Google Maps to plan the day. Our walking tour of downtown will start and end at the Idaho State Capitol and take us to a point of interest for each topic the students' studied.
CHAPERONES NEEDED! Now for the fun part! We will need 3-4 adult chaperones to join us on our Monday May 9th trip. Even if you have already reached out, please send me an email to sign up and confirm.
The bus will pick us up at Lowell at 9:30am and drop us off at the Idaho State Capitol. In the afternoon, we will be picked up at the Capitol and dropped off at Lowell by 1:30pm. The students will be guiding us around the city and keeping us on schedule, so the main role of the chaperones will be supporting student safety and decorum.
Here is the current working schedule. The students will present their research in the classroom on May 2nd, so the main point of the trip is to see the places mentioned in the presentations first hand; practice independence, leadership, and etiquette while navigating the city; and celebrating a fantastic elementary GATE career!
I will send out permission forms soon. A single scoop of ice cream from Stella's and 2 slices of pizza and a drink from Pie Hole will be covered by Foundation Account funds. If a student would like to pack a lunch or purchase more, they will need to bring money with them.
Thank you so much to everyone that has donated to the Lowell GATE Classroom Fund this year! Your donations have purchased 2 drone kits, tons of art and engineering supplies, and 5 huge Lego sets! I have my eye on some Rubik's cubes, a full-sized microscope, and math/strategy challenges. Please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account.
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
