Today was a BUSY day as computer chip designers! GATE parents Paul Zeman and Annie Crozier visited to teach the class about Paul's job working for the Amazon 126 Lab. He taught us about the basics of computer chips and walked the students through creating their own single circuit lighted artwork!
*Please note that the circuits run on a 3V button battery. The creations were sent home sealed in a duct-taped zip bag in case the risk of a button battery being ingested by a pet or child is a concern at your house. The students know that they may not be able to keep the circuit in tact, and some students opted to not bring the battery home.*
The process took a lot of trouble shooting and got all of our brains working. In the end, all circuits were successful!
After recess and choice time, the students played a random choice game where they selected an random input device (sound is heard, motion is detected, darkness is detected, etc) and a random output device (a door opens, an alarm sounds, a timer starts, etc) and had to think of a useful invention that would utilize that input and output. Then, they used their maker boxes to create models of a smart machine of their design!
😲 ONLY 4 MORE 1st GRADE GATE CLASSES THIS YEAR! 😲
Our last day is May 12th.
The first round of 5th graders shared their Genius Hour projects this week! The projects came together really nicely, and most students were very excited to share when their name was randomly drawn. Several students are not quite finished with their projects and will need to 1) simplify their vision, 2) work outside of GATE class time, or 3) work during GATE Choice Time until it is complete.
After each research and product presentation, students practiced giving positive, productive, and specific feedback to their peers. Most students did great at this. Some students struggled to avoid silly or minimal feedback. We will work on this for the next round of presentations next week.
Projects are linked on students' digital portfolios.

Our last day is May 13th.
Today the 4th graders added finishing touches to their hero's journey projects, and then half of the class was able to share their work and receive peer feedback on their digital portfolios. The hard work and attention to detail was evident in all of today's performances. Next week, the rest of the students will share their work and the students will complete a self-reflection in their digital portfolio.
