The 2nd and 3rd graders started a new unit today! Over the next several weeks, we will be spanning art, engineering, and biology through our study of photography, cameras, and the workings of the human eye. Today, students learned about the basics of photographic composition. We looked at lots of examples that illustrated the composition tactics of the Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines, Symmetry and Pattern, Framing, Creative Viewpoint, and Filling the Frame. Students were able to then take their new knowledge into the field to practice these composition tactics in the classroom and around the schoolyard using classroom tablets. Next week, they will work with their partner to create a composition guide in Google Slides using their own photographs. This guide will be added to their digital portfolio.
With parent permission, students are welcome to bring a point and shoot camera from home for GATE class for the next couple weeks. I would prefer that they not bring expensive DSLRs. However, I will have a few DSLRs for the students to practice taking photos with direct supervision.
Thank you so much to everyone that has donated to the GATE classroom! There have been several anonymous donors who don't get to receive a fun thank you card in the mail, so please know how much we appreciate your generosity. We have already been able to get power tools, craft supplies, and TONS of Lego bricks! Two new drones will also be added to our fleet in time for the 5th/6th grade drone programming project!
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education both in person and virtually. Our current wish list includes a set of classroom cameras, a Tello drone kit, Rubiks Cubes, graphic novels, and more enriching art and tech! (I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
