The 2nd graders started their day by creating an All About Me circle map in their Book Creator portfolios. This is where they will add work samples throughout the year for their families to see. The students used a brainstorm sheet to think of some things about themselves before choosing their favorite 4 items to add to a circle map. If they had time, they could personalize their circle map to better reflect their personality. Next week, students will have the chance to share their circle maps with their classmates.
Choice Time this week consisted of geometry games and puzzles. Several students chose activities that were rated as "extra challenging," which was so cool to see! We are practicing developing a mindset that, "We can do hard things!"
In the afternoon, we started a mini unit on the Fibonacci sequence. About half of the students in the class were introduced to Fibonacci in their regular classes, so it will be fun to expand on that learning at a deeper level at GATE! Today, we discovered the pattern in the Fibonacci sequence, wrote the sequence out to its TWENTIETH value (we will go even higher later...), and read a book about the sequence in nature. Next week, we will go on a Fibonacci scavenger hunt in the school yard, complete some mathematical artwork, and graph a perfect Fibonacci spiral. Students should be on the lookout this week for items in nature that align with the Fibonacci numbers.
0, 1, 1, 2, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987, 1597, 2584, 4181, 6765, ...
Thank you to today's classroom helper, Laura! It makes such a difference!
Authentic project-based and teamwork challenges can be incredibly, well, challenging with a class of 26 energetic and ambitious second graders every Friday. If you would be willing to be a second grade classroom helper for a full or half-day this semester, sign up for a slot (or 12) on this document. If you have any questions, please reach out!
Thank you so much to those of you that have donated to the Lowell GATE Foundation Account so far this year! There are a few things that families might have extra of at home that would benefit that class as well, so I thought I'd list those here:
handheld, cordless dust-buster vacuum (used is great!)
Allergy-friendly snacks (Our 3rd and 2nd graders have very late lunches and sometime forget or can't bring a snack to GATE.) Snacks like Chewy bars, popcorn, Clif bars, and raisins are great!
Used picture books and short novels (think, Encyclopedia Brown) for younger students to choose as a birthday gift! I have a good collection of 4th-6th grade novels right now, but I may need more later.)
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education both in person and virtually. Our current wish list includes a set of classroom cameras (~$100 ea), our own set of 6 classroom Tello drones ($150 ea) that we don't have to share, Rubiks Cubes ($12), and a hand-held vacuum cleaner! The 6th graders will also be going on THREE field trips this semester, and we will need one of the bus trips (~$100) covered by Foundation donations. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THOSE WHO ALREADY DONATED!
IT WILL BE PUT TO GOOD USE RIGHT AWAY!
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
