Our day started with one final bridge test left over from the third-quarter unit. This "archi-lever" bridge had a cable design flaw the first time around, so we wanted to retest it upside down to see if it could hold more weight with the cables in tension. It held 25 pounds, five times more than it held when the cables were not helping! We also got to check out a video shared by a student about the Puente Colgante, a hanging transporter bridge in Spain's Basque country and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Students then worked on their bridge project reflections in their digital portfolios while new students set up their digital portfolios and learned how to navigate the Book Creator platform.ย
Many of the students loved the brain unit so much, and I came across some spare cow eyeballs (as one does), so we decided to finish the year with an eyeball study. The unit will end with an optional cow eye dissection lab. Some students also expressed interest in learning about some theater skills, so we will be adding some theater activities into our final GATE days as well.
Thank you so much to everyone that has donated to the Lowell GATE Classroom Fund this year! Your donations have purchased 2 drone kits, tons of art and engineering supplies, and 5 huge Lego sets! I have my eye on some Rubik's cubes, a full-sized microscope, and math/strategy challenges. Please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account.ย
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
