Two students with a cow's eyeball and a model they made from craft supplies.
What an exciting finale to our eyeball study! This morning the students finished their mini research projects and uploaded them to their digital portfolios. In the afternoon, the students took their eye anatomy post-test to compare to their pre-test and celebrate how much they have learned. Almost every student improved their score from the start of the study. Then, it was time for the cow eye dissection! The students who were not excited about the idea of dissection watch an episode of Cosmos about the light spectrum. Meanwhile, the rest of the class watched a video of a cow eye dissection and then got to try it out. The 3rd grade students shared one eye, and the 2nd grade students and I shared a second eye. It was fascinating to get to see the anterior and posterior sections of the eye and identify the anatomy we have only seen in photos thus far. The lens and the iridescent tapetum lucidum were the class favorites.
We will be finishing the year with a bit more photography and some one-off engineering challenges. Only 4 GATE classes left this year!
Thank you so much to everyone that has donated to the Lowell GATE Classroom Fund this year! Your donations have purchased 2 drone kits, tons of art and engineering supplies, and 5 huge Lego sets! I have my eye on some Rubik's cubes, a full-sized microscope, and math/strategy challenges. Please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account.
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
