Today the 1st grader class learned about inclusive design and created blueprints and models for their dream inclusive playgrounds! They first challenged their perspective by creating a bird's-eye-view drawing of their dream playground. They then viewed a couple different news stories about kids and adults who created "playgrounds for all" in their communities that allow people of all different physical and cognitive abilities to play side by side.
The students then went back to the drawing board and eventually built playground models using their Maker Boxes and classroom supplies, all the while thinking about how to make sure that anyone could enjoy their dream playground. Some students saved time to add photos and videos of their designs to their Book Creator Portfolios and some where so engrossed in their building that I will just be adding photos of their designs for them later. haha
Adults who would be willing to video chat or stop by the 1st grade class and share about their career, especially if it is a STEM career! If you are willing to hold a Q and A with the students, I can design classwork to accompany your job. Or, if you would like to teach the students something, that's great too! Last year, we had fun learning about architecture, wildlife biology, computer coding, and several other careers. I can't wait to see what we can put together for the students this year!
